If your vehicle fails its MOT, it doesn’t meet the necessary legal requirements and must be repaired in order to comply with MOT Test standards. What should I do if my vehicle fails its MOT? When you get your certificate back there will be notes which your Nominated Tester gives you informing you of the reasons why your vehicle failed and will help you decide what to do next.

We are able to do your MOT in our Sheffield 8 garage while you wait.  Why not do some shopping at the many local shops whilst we do it? Based just off Abbeydale Road in Sheffield, we are conveniently located near cafes, restaurants and supermarket superstores, as well as a range of interesting independent shops.

A quality MOT in Sheffield | TM Automotive | What we test!

The test involves a nominated tester checking some of the most important safety aspects including;

Mirrors - The condition of your mirrors will be inspected to ensure that they are safely attached, in good working order or if they are all present. Mirrors shouldn’t be cracked and must be in good condition.

Doors – During the MOT we will check that all the doors work properly. They must be able to open and close as well as stay closed securely when shut. The doors must be sufficiently attached to the car and so be fit for purpose. Some common problems with doors can be that they have damaged hinges which can lead to the door falling off. It is also important for the doors to have a release mechanism and functioning handles. This is so you would be able to get out of your car quickly in an emergency.

Seats – We will also check your seats during the test.  We will make sure your seats are properly secured, in the driving position and ensure that there are no broken nuts, bolts or joints. The seat belts are also checked to make sure they are in good working condition without being frayed or ripped. This integral part of the car’s safety system is a very important part of the MOT.

Horn – Again, as part of the test and an important safety aspect the horn must be audible and work correctly.

Lights- We will check that all your lights are in good working order, the right colours, and angle and are securely attached to the vehicle. There are many different types of lights to be checked including, hazard lights, stop lights, rear reflectors rear fog lamps and number plate lamps.

Registration plate – We will check that the plate is visible at the front and rear of the vehicle.  A cracked number plate or one where the letters and numbers are unrecognisable will fail an MOT.

Vehicle Identification Number – This is sometimes known as the chassis number and must be legible and securely fixed to the vehicle.

Check for Exhaust Emissions – There is a minimum requirement for the exhaust emissions that are produced which can vary according to the type of fuel the vehicle uses. The way we test the emissions is by connecting a special computer to measure the hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide levels.  If the levels are high then the car can fail the MOT. There are several reasons why a vehicle might fail this test including a faulty emission control system or engine damage.

Checking exhaust emissions for MOT test

Exhaust System – The exhaust can fail its MOT if it is too loud, corroded or leaks.  It must be silenced correctly according to the model and make of the vehicle.

Fuel SystemThe MOT check we carry out will look at the fuel caps and lines.  This involves checking for fuel leaks from the hoses, petrol tank or injectors as well as the petrol tank condition. The fuel system will be followed all the way to the fuel injectors and any leak found will mean a car will fail its test. A faulty fuel cap will also result in an MOT fail as will a fuel system that has sign of leaks.
Check for Wipers and Washers - These must be fully functioning on the front. A faulty windscreen wiper can be extremely hazardous if it fails to work properly in poor weather conditions.

Check for Steering and Suspension Steering and Suspension - The test will check steering and suspension. We start inside the vehicle by checking the condition and movement of the steering wheel and steering column.

Tyre tread depth check for MOT

Check for Wheels and Tyres The Nominated Tester will check your tyres. They will check that treads on the tyres are at least 1.6mm deep across the central three-quarters of the tread width around the whole circumference of the tyre. The test will then check that tyres fitted on the same axle are the same size, type and structure, that there are no bulges or cuts on the tyres.

Man checking car brakes to see if they should pass the MOT test

Check for Brakes - The brakes will be checked from inside and outside the vehicle. Inside checks will make sure the brake lights work properly and that the brake pedal has an anti-slip device that is in good condition. The handbrake should hold onto its ratchet when applied and the brake pedal should not have excessive travel to the floor. On the outside the vehicle, the test will check for brake fluid leaks as well as any damage to the brake pipes and parking brake cables.

Check for Windscreen - The windscreen must be free from chips and damage as well as free of obstacles blocking the view. Any chip, crack or sticker contained within the prescribed area bigger than 10mm will fail . Any chip, crack or sticker within the swept area that is larger than 40mm will also mean that the vehicle will fail.
This is a quick guide to what your MOT will involve but please contact us for further information on 0114 2586663 or to chat about any specific requirements for your vehicle.
